How Long is a Piece of String?

When discussing ideas for the Edale shoot, we were initially going to approach it in a documentary style. We opted instead to include a narrative as this would make for a more engaging piece that an audience could connect with, as opposed to a series of abstract location shots with nothing to tie them together. The narrative simply depicts a man as he follows a piece of string that he comes across. What starts as an exhilarating quest for him soon turns into a frustrating struggle as the strings path becomes more arduous. The journey ends when the string leads him back to the original starting point, much to the mans dismay. The basic premise enabled us to create dynamic shots using the string in a number of ways, and having never been to Edale we were able to draw up some simple story boards that could be applied to several locations.
We opted to give the film a comical tone rather than take a morbid approach.
